What is Active Release Techniques (ART)?

ART is a patented, state of the art movement based technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.  ART can quickly and permanently resolve many conditions some of which include:  headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.

How do overuse conditions occur? Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:

  • acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc),
  • accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
  • not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia).

Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.

The ART provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.

Dr. Robinson also has certification in the Webster Technique. Webster utilizes specific protocols to help women to have a more comfortable pregnancy through spinal health.


Education/Injury Prevention:

The key to treating your injury/pain is properly diagnosing why it has occurred. Our doctors do extensive testing to understand the source of your injury. Once the true source is known they will educate you so that you clearly understand why the injury has happened and what you can do to prevent it from happening again. Our doctors will aspire to help you stay out of our office which means you are living an injury/pain free lifestyle. Being educated on how to proactively prevent your injuries is a focus in our practice.


Ergonomics Training:

One of the keys to maintaining a healthy, pain free, injury free body boils down to knowing the proper ergonomics to maintain during your day and while doing your chosen activity. Our doctors have been extensively trained in this area of expertise and will aspire to educate you on how you can better get through your day/activities with proper ergonomics which in turn will prevent injuries/pain.


Rehabilitation:

Another key to you remaining injury and pain free is accomplished through proper rehabilitation. Our doctors are trained in the latest rehabilitation techniques and will build a rehab program just for you. The program will help you re-balance and strengthen your weaker areas and assist you with achieving a balanced body of stability, mobility and flexibility. Our doctors will show you rehab exercises that can be performed to help you recover from your injury and remain injury free.
